Walter Gard as I remember Him

"Father" for that's what we called him. It was what his children called him and as grand-children that is what we called him. Father came to live with my mother, my brother peter and I in 1938 when I was six years old. I lived in the same house as him until I married in 1954, a period of 16 years.

He usually wore a flannel singlet with short arm and two buttons to allow it to be buttoned up to his neck. Over this he wore a grey shirt with long sleeves. Then he wore a black waistcoat in which he carried his watch and chain. Ask the time and out would come the watch, click would go the winder and the cover would open to reveal the face of the watch.
