Sgt Vernon Claud Gard, NZEF

Vernon was 16 months old when his mother passed away and his father William didn't remarry till after he left home. Very little is known about his early life. He was working as a Tram Conductor in Wellington, New Zealand for City Corporation at the start of WW1. He enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on the 6th of March 1916 as a gunner. He served for a period of 3 years 227 days.

Vernon listed Ernest Mead from New Town, Wellington as his next of kin. He also listed the Imperial Hotel , in Cygnet, Tasmania as a referance. He later worked there as a barman in 1937 .

After the War he returned to New Zealand and married Pheobe Tomlinson in 1927. They later separated and what became of her is unknown. more pictures
